VISION

We, the Bates Community envision developing lifelong learners into confident, competent, contributing members of society.

MISSION

The International Baccalaureate mission of Bates Middle School is to nurture the willingness to learn and foster compassion for other individuals, groups and communities in all students by providing innovative, rigorous and diverse learning experiences which will develop confident, competent, contributing members of our global society.

BELIEFS
  • All children can learn; they are our highest priority.
  • The middle school child has specific developmental needs that must be addressed.
  • Children learn best in a safe, secure and orderly environment.
  • Students, parents, teachers and the community must work together to educate our children.
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity fosters tolerance.
  • Education is essential for the survival of society.
  • High expectations increase student achievement.
  • Communication is essential at all levels to ensure positive development.
  • Equal opportunity is an inherent human right.
  • Students, teachers and parents must show mutual respect in order to create a positive learning environment.

Bates Middle School will be implementing a school uniform dress code for the 2009-2010 school year on a voluntary basis for all grade levels.  Parent input obtained through surveys and meetings indicate support for a school uniform plan.  A decrease in school discipline issues; an increase in school spirit; and an improved focus on academics are expected to occur as this policy helps remove distractions to our learning environment.  Approved school uniform attire may consist of a polo-type shirt in either white, red, black or beige with long pants, jumpers, skirts, shorts, or capri in either black or khaki and school spirit items such as BMS T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts.  Parents should be able to save on back-to-school expenses since these items can be purchased at all local stores.

Ms. Theresa A. Cousar is a graduate of Manning High School.  She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Morris College and a Master’s Degree from Francis Marion University.  Ms. Cousar has been employed in Sumter District 17 for ten years.  Within the district, she has taught first, third, and sixth grade.  She has also taught keyboarding and computer classes at Central Carolina Technical College for the Continuing Education Program.  Ms. Cousar has worked with the Williamsburg Technical College Upward Bound Program as an English/ Reading instructor. Her affiliations are PTSA, Palmetto State Teachers Association, Pi Lambda Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., and Who’s Who Among American Teachers. Her motto is “To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you may be the world.”
